What makes a receipt valid in Japan

A receipt is a short document, but three details decide whether the client can use it.

Who it is addressed to: Write the payer exactly as their registered company name. A receipt made out to an abbreviation or a personal name may be rejected by their accounting department.
What the payment was for: Name the goods or service rather than writing a generic label. Japanese tax practice expects the purpose to be identifiable from the receipt alone.
Revenue stamp above 50,000 yen: Paper receipts for 50,000 yen or more require a revenue stamp under the Japanese Stamp Duty Act. A receipt delivered purely as an electronic file does not, which is one reason clients accept PDFs.
